CLIMATE CHANGE AND THE ENVIRONMENT

There is a high probability that you have been made aware of the topic of climate change and its environmental impact through media coverage over the last few years. The topic is not only in most people’s minds but also now on the agenda of most organisations, and the u3a is no exception. As a result, the Third Age Trust has set up a website for a u3a “Climate Change Network” and has produced an Environmental Policy template for use by the associated u3a’s.

Our Committee has agreed that it is a topic that we need to take on board. We have therefore produced an Environmental Policy document, based on the TAT template, which sets out the Environmental aims for ensuring that our activities are as environmentally friendly as possible. This policy document is now on our website.

The policy document also proposes that a new “Environmental Group” is set up which will have a number of objectives. These include (but is not restricted to); discussing the topic, considering how to improve approaches to reducing the impact of our activities on the environment, interacting with external bodies and making recommendations back to the Committee via the Environmental representative.

The committee believes that this group will be contributing towards an interesting topical issue which has “Real World” impacts. Anyone who is interested in being part of the group (and in particular, leading the group) should contact me initially or the Groups Co-ordinator (Denis Raingold) in order to register your interest.
